National Hurricane Center monitoring tropical wave in the Gulf of Mexico

It was 760 miles (1,225 km) west of Bermuda early Monday, moving at 5 mph (7 kph), and may bring heavy rains there by late Wednesday, the NHC said in its 5 a.m. advisory.

Officials temporarily suspended aid efforts and closed a couple of small airports in the Bahamas on Saturday as Tropical Storm Humberto threatened to lash the archipelago's northwest region that was already hit by Hurricane Dorian two weeks ago.

It had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, slightly below hurricane strength, but was expected to gain power through the day.

Thankfully, the Bahamas, which recently suffered the devastating hurricane Dorian, dodged the worst part of Humberto, the National Hurricane Center says.

The disturbance in the Atlantic is forecast to move north-northwest in the coming days and could strengthen into a hurricane by Friday, according to CNN Meteorologist Michael Guy. "On the forecast track, the center of Humberto will continue to move away from the Bahamas and remain well offshore of the east coast of Florida through Wednesday". The extra moisture is the result of a weak tropical wave moving towards the Texas coast in the Gulf of Mexico.

Officials have erected large tents in Nassau to house those made homeless by Dorian.

It won't threaten land as a hurricane but its swells could affect the coasts of Florida, Georgia and SC later this weekend and early next week.

Humberto has been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane and is a threat to Bermuda.

Humberto is now the eighth named storm of the season.

United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres arrived in the capital Nassau on Friday, meeting people displaced by the hurricane and pledging United Nations aid.
