"Many times, we hear that our generation is going to be the one in charge of dealing with the problems that current leaders have created, and we will not wait passively to become that future: The time is now for us to be leaders". How dare you? You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, and yet, I'm one of the lucky ones.

Those countries are France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Turkey; they are accused of not curbing emissions and promoting fossil fuels, despite being well aware of the risks of climate change.

United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres, who convened the summit to urge increased action on tackling emissions, welcomed the young people who have been protesting over climate change. In a clear snub, the White House instead reserved a conference room where Trump would attend a conference on religious freedom along with Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

"There's a tension between the countries that want to go ahead to translate their goals into real policies" and those that do not, she said.

Nevertheless, there were few new proposals from governments for the kind of rapid change climate scientists say is now needed to avert devastating impacts from warming.

The UN estimates there needs to be between a three-fold and five-fold increase in efforts to cut greenhouse gases, to prevent global temperatures rising more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels and avoid the worst impacts of climate change. We have lived irresponsibly, as [Thunberg] says.

The Climate Action Tracker NGO has included Russian Federation among the five countries whose commitments are "critically insufficient" to hold warming within the 2 degrees Celsius that, according to studies, will set off a "new climate regime" in many regions of the world.

"We can use this summit as a slingshot toward further agreements that need to be reached in the climate negotiations, at the end of this year and at the end of 2020", she said.

According to the United Nations, 70 per cent of global carbon emissions come from cities.

United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, Jayathma Wickramanayake, said Climate change is the defining issue of our time.

The UN published a report on the eve of the summit that said the five-year period ending 2019 was set to be the hottest ever, the latest grim reminder that climate change is already a reality.

Monday's complaint focuses on a little-known "optional protocol" that came into effect in 2014 that allows children to file a complaint to the Committee on the Rights of the Child if they feel their rights are being denied.

Her visit to NY comes after hundreds of thousands of youth in cities across the world marched in a climate strike on Friday, demanding politicians take immediate action to combat climate change. Young people are starting to understand your betrayal.
