The U.S. now has 12,000-13,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan as part of a NATO-sponsored initiative to train local forces. A peace deal would allow the U.S.to bring home its troops from Afghanistan and end its 18-year military engagement there, America's longest.

Washington's peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has been trying to hammer out a peace agreement with the Taliban for over a year.

The attack occurred while USA and Afghan forces were conducting a raid in the province of Kunduz, specifically the Chardara district.

Earlier Monday, the Taliban claimed responsibility for Goble's death, even as peace negotiations between the group and USA continue.

During the forthcoming round of talks between the USA and the Taliban, both sides will establish a timeline for signing the peace agreement and starting the intra-Afghan talks, TOLO News reported citing an informed source as saying on Friday.

The attack came even as Taliban officials told The Associated Press just hours earlier that a temporary, nationwide cease-fire has been agreed upon among their council leaders.

"As a result of this attack, seven Afghan Army soldiers died and three others were wounded", Afghan Defense Ministry officials said in a statement.

On Monday, an American soldier was killed in combat in the northern Kunduz province. He claimed his forces blew up an American vehicle in Kunduz province on Sunday with an improvised explosive device, killing one American and wounding another along with an Afghan commando.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media, but were familiar with the ongoing US-Taliban negotiations.

The release of 5,000 prisoners of Taliban has been written in to the peace agreement draft which is going to be soon signed between United States and Taliban, AP reported. The Taliban has said it is responsible for the attack, though the US military said it is investigating whether the movement's claims are accurate. More than 2,400 Americans have been killed since the war started almost 18 years ago.

There are now more than 12,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan.
