First details for 'Captain Marvel 2' emerge

Dear Marvel, just bring back the cat for Captain Marvel 2.

The superhero movie starred Brie Larson in the titular role, also known as Carol Danvers. Instead, the studio has tapped WandaVision series scribe Megan McDonnell as the new Captain Marvel 2 writer, and is now on the hunt for a female director as the sequel flies closer to its prospective 2022 release date.

WandaVision story editror Megan McDonnell is reportedly in negotiations to script the Captain Marvel sequel, with a plan to set it in the present day.

Unlike the original, The Hollywood Reporter have stated that the action in Captain Marvel 2 will move away from the '90s. Marvel Studios is apparently seeking a new female director for this sequel. Captain Marvel raked in over $1.1 billion worldwide and kicked off word-of-mouth buzz that prompted a highly publicized (and slightly disappointing) extended appearance for Larson in Avengers: Endgame.

Also expected in 2022 is the third Ant-Man and possibly the third Deadpool, and if you couple those with Black Panther and Captain Marvel; it'd make that year pretty big for Marvel Studios.

WandaVision is the first major credit for McDonnell, who began the series as a staff writer and was promoted to story editor. In the comics, Rambeau took the mantle of Captain Marvel at one point. Disney and Marvel have not yet set a release date or announced a title for the sequel.

Disney had three untitled Marvel movies down for a 2022 release as of last May, when it revealed its future slate. The Hollyood trade goes on to say that Marvel studios is aiming to find a female director for this second film.
