Canada reports second 'presumptive' coronavirus case

Now, a statement from the province said, "the wife of the province's first case of Wuhan novel coronavirus has tested positive for the virus at Ontario's public health laboratory". A Toronto man in his mid-50s had initially tested positive at a provincial facility days after returning to Toronto from Wuhan - the virus's epicentre in China.

The husband arrived at Sunnybrook hospital by ambulance the next day and Yaffe says paramedics arrived in protective equipment, placing the man in isolation in a negative pressure room where he remains stable.

Officials said, if confirmed, the woman who is undergoing further tests after showing flu-like symptoms, will be the first case of the novel coronavirus in Africa.

"We are working alongside Toronto Public Health, who has been in regular contact with the individual during their self-isolation period", said Dr. Williams. He qualified the risk to others in Ontario as "low", given that the woman has been in self-isolation.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, has repeatedly stressed that the new coronavirus is unlikely to be transmitted through casual contact and will most likely only be contracted by people with close, prolonged contact with an infected patient.

While she did not mention the exact number of individuals which had been tested for the coronavirus regionally, she pointed out how there has not been a single confirmed case in Canada. Most people who have been diagnosed with the virus live in China.

Public health also met Friday with clinical providers and education officials "to ensure we had good lines of communication with each other and were all accessing the same sites for valid and credible information, and could ramp up quickly if anything needed to happen", said Sutcliffe.

Having both leaders present helps take the politics out of the effort, said a US source familiar with internal deliberations. The Palestinians, claiming the White House is unfairly biased toward Israel, have already said they won't accept the plan.

"It's a swab that goes down the back of your nose into the back of your throat", she said.

Some experts have praised Beijing for being more reactive and open about this virus compared to its handling of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic of 2002-2003. The patient was screened, recent travel history to Wuhan, China, was confirmed and the patient was immediately put under isolation.

There are now 1,975 confirmed infections of the Wuhan coronavirus in China, which has so far killed 56 people. Officials said on Tuesday that he is doing well as he recovers at home.

What happened: Health Canada is not answering questions on exactly how many health and safety workers, or quarantine officials, are based at Canadian airports but it is promising that it will deploy more officials at airports later this week. We are in contact with and support the Canadian Canadians, "said Champagne in a statement". "Nevertheless it would not be unexpected that there will be more cases imported into Canada in the near-term given global travel patterns".

Dr. Yaffe said the National Microbiology lab in Winnipeg has now confirmed coronavirus in a Toronto man who is currently at Sunnybrook Hospital.

Cases of coronaviruses have, however, already been detected in the US, France, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea and Nepal. The SARS infection ultimately infected 8,000 people and killed 774, including 44 Canadians.
