The new cases bring the total on the Diamond Princess to 542.

That raised the number of deaths in mainland China to 1,868 and the total number of confirmed cases to 72,436, according to China's National Health Commission.

Since the virus was identified late previous year in central China, it has sickened tens of thousands of people and killed more than 1,800.

Hundreds of passengers have flown home, mostly through Thailand or Malaysia, after the ship docked in the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville and health authorities there deemed it coronavirus-free.

Two out of the three infected Indonesian nationals have been taken to a hospital in the city of China, while the other one is in the process of heading to health facilities. The most medically vulnerable passengers will be allowed to disembark first. Hubei in part has the largest share of virus cases in China because it is the only province that discloses so called clinical cases - symptomatic patients who haven't tested positive for the virus.

But by the time their test results arrived, they were on a fleet of buses that took 328 asymptomatic passengers from the ship to two charter planes bound for U.S. military bases in Texas and California, according to a senior United States official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak freely about the incident.

Mr. Haering said he had not heard from anyone at Princess Cruises, the company that operates the Diamond Princess, since he arrived at the hospital.

"This disembarkation will be an ongoing process" until February 22, the captain said in an onboard announcement.

On Monday Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, on the advice of the Health Ministry, ordered that non-Israeli nationals from Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macau will not be granted entry to Israel, as a further precaution.
