Health officials confirm two cases of community transmission of coronavirus in California

The case was the second incidence of possible community-acquired infection in the United States, but hours later officials said there was a third case with no known source of illness in OR and a fourth case in Washington.

"This will greatly enhance the city and state's ability to test for potential cases of COVID-19 and to expand surveillance across the state", Becker said in a prepared statement Saturday.

"We are actively working with the CDC, with local governments, health facilities, and health care providers across the state to respond as new cases are identified", said Dr. Sonia Angell, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Health Officer. They were urged to quarantine themselves at home, while a few who showed symptoms of illness were in isolation, officials said.

The person is also employed at a school in Clackamas County and may have exposed students and staff there, they add.

The White House cautioned Friday that schools could be shuttered and public transportation could be impacted as the virus spreads in the United States. They are considered presumptive positive cases until the results are confirmed by CDC testing.

The woman, from Solano County, was not tested for coronavirus until days later.

The case of the infected women marks an escalation of the worldwide outbreak in the USA because it means the virus could spread beyond the reach of preventative measures like quarantines, though state health officials said that was inevitable and that the risk of widespread transmission remains low.

"There was no known travel exposure for this individual".

A news release issued by state officials gave no details. Earlier today the California Department of Public Health announced that CDC test kits used to detect COVID-19 had arrived in California.

In the US, Walgreens, Home Depot, Lowe's and True Value Hardware have reported a sharp uptick in sales of masks over the past several weeks and said they are scrambling to get more from suppliers.

He has spoken to the CDC, who he says have assured him many more test kits will soon be available. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said her clinical team has not declined any request for testing.

US President Donald Trump said he would address the media about the "latest coronavirus developments" at 1:30 pm Eastern time (1830 GMT).

Americans, Messonnier said, should start preparing for "significant disruption" to their lives. "This is a new virus and we are still learning from it".

Worldwide more than 84,000 people have been infected with the disease and 2,870 have died. The origin of the virus isn't known.

The virus can cause fever, coughing, wheezing and pneumonia.

Tedros also emphasized that people can protect themselves from the new coronavirus and other illnesses by washing their hands regularly with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand rub. That's up from the 8,400 that Newsom cited on Thursday, though officials said the number increases daily as more flights arrive. Family and household members should try to stay at least 6 feet away from sick people.
