China reports 130 asymptomatic cases of Coronavirus in one day

By Wednesday, the Chinese mainland had reported 841 imported cases from 47 countries, said Mi Feng, spokesperson for the NHC, at a press conference.

They examined the movements of 4.3 million people out of Wuhan before the travel ban, the types and timing of control measures implemented across the cities of China, and the numbers of COVID-19 cases reported each day in every city.

Mi stressed further tightening epidemic control in communities around the country and conducting thorough epidemiological investigations to contain the virus.

Most recently, detected asymptomatic individuals were subject to a 14-day quarantine and were required to test negative in two separate nucleic acid tests before being released.

Many on social media said they were terrified of the high number of asymptomatic carriers, and some called for health officials to break down the data by province.

"It's OK if they aren't included in the tally of confirmed cases", Zeng Guang, the chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told a state-run magazine.

Seven more people have died of the disease, taking the total number to 3,312.

But several hours later, government officials said the quarantine order had been in effect for more than 12 hours already. On Sunday, Hajdu said the government was looking at all the measures in their tool box, including criminal penalties.

China on Wednesday began publishing asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 alongside active cases of the deadly virus.

By Wednesday, 765 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 41 confirmed cases in the Macau SAR, and 329 in Taiwan including five deaths.

The tally of confirmed symptomatic cases for mainland China now stands at 81,589 including 841 infections found in travelers from overseas.

China, which has banned new arrivals of foreigners to minimise imported cases, is limping back to normal with most of the factories and businesses humming with activity.

While it's unclear what proportion of infected people do not display symptoms, scientists suspect it could be a substantial number and that these stealthy carriers are still infectious - a key reason why the pandemic has spread so widely across the world in a short time. Nine asymptomatic cases, all imported ones, were re-categorized as confirmed infections, and 338 were discharged from medical observation, according to the commission. As a result, they reported 33% fewer confirmed cases during the first week of their outbreaks than cities that did not implement a Level 1 Response.

During a meeting on Monday, the central leading group for epidemic control headed by Premier Li Keqiang also emphasised the monitoring and managing of asymptomatic infections and their close contacts.
