Pac-12 to play only conference football games in 2020

The Big Ten and Pac-12 became the first Power Five leagues to shift to an all-conference fall schedule as college sports faces a dramatically different landscape due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Between the lines: Most of the canceled football games in the Pac-12 and Big Ten are unglamorous matchups against small schools counting on big payouts to keep their athletic budgets afloat when they are already facing ugly bottom lines.

"As we continue to focus on how to play this season in a safe and responsible way, based on the best advice of medical experts, we are also prepared not to play in order to ensure the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes should the circumstances so dictate", it read. "We will continue to evaluate our options to play a complete football schedule".

The move also includes men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball among others.

That means FAU's September 3 season opener at Minnesota and Miami's September 26 non-conference game at Michigan State won't be played as scheduled.
